Crustal remanence in an internally magnetized non-uniform shell : a possible source for Mercury’s magnetic ¢eld?
نویسندگان
چکیده
We consider the magnetic field of a shell uniformly magnetized by an internal dipole that is subsequently removed. The Gauss coefficients of the resulting field are given in terms of the spherical harmonic coefficients of the shell thickness. This general solution can easily be reduced to common special cases by superposition. For a shell of constant thickness the external field vanishes (by Runcorn’s theorem). For shell thickness variations caused by a laterally varying temperature field, the resulting magnetic moments are appreciably greater than the previously published correction due to rotational flattening. If the crust of Mercury contains rocks capable of sustaining high specific magnetizations, orif Mercury had a now-extinct dynamo field which was more intense than the Earth’s present core field, then the Mariner 10 observations of Mercury’s magnetic field are consistent in magnitude and geometry with the predictions of this model. For such a scenario, the requirement of a fractionally large molten outer core supporting a dynamo at present would be relaxed. The origin of Mercury’s magnetic field will be addressed with measurements to be made by NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft. 7 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Low-altitude magnetic field measurements by MESSENGER reveal Mercury’s ancient crustal field
Magnetized rocks can record the history of the magnetic field of a planet, a key constraint for understanding its evolution. From orbital vector magnetic field measurements of Mercury taken by the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft at altitudes below 150 kilometers, we have detected remanent magnetization in Mercury’s crust. We infer a lower boun...
متن کاملLocal spectral variability and the origin of the Martian crustal magnetic field
[1] The crustal remanent magnetic field of Mars remains enigmatic in many respects. Its heterogeneous surface distribution points to a complex history of formation and modification, and has been resistant to attempts at identifying magnetic paleopoles and constraining the geologic origin of crustal sources. We use a multitaper technique to quantify the spatial diversity of the field via the loc...
متن کاملThickness of the Magnetic Crust of Mars from Magneto-spectral Analysis
Previous analysis of the magnetic spectrum of Mars showed only a crustal source field [1]. The observational spectrum was fairly well fitted by the spectrum expected from random dipolar sources scattered on a spherical shell about 46 ± 10 km below Mars’ 3389.5 km mean radius. This de-correlation depth overestimates the typical depth of extended magnetized structures, and so was judged closer to...
متن کاملThe Geophysics of Mercury: Current Status and Anticipated Insights from the MESSENGER Mission
Current geophysical knowledge of the planet Mercury is based upon observations from ground-based astronomy and flybys of the Mariner 10 spacecraft, along with theoretical and computational studies. Mercury has the highest uncompressed density of the terrestrial planets and by implication has a metallic core with a radius approximately 75% of the planetary radius. Mercury’s spin rate is stably l...

We reconsider the thermoelectric dynamo model for the generation of the magnetic /eld of Mercury, as proposed by Stevenson (Earth Planet. Sci. Lett. 82 (1987) 114). We brie4y review the status of our knowledge about the nature of Mercury’s planetary /eld, and describe the main features of the /eld generated through a thermoelectric dynamo, including its multipole expansion. We then discuss the ...
